Goal: Work with the city of Ann Arbor to see how residents and commuters are responding to their project “Vision Zero”.

Overview

After of course learning about Vision Zero and the goals the city had for the public transportation systems, our next step was to start reaching out and seeing how the people affected felt.

Vision Zero is a project started by the city of Ann Arbor that is working to make improvements to their public transportation systems.

The 5 points that Vision Zero focus on are…

  • Safety

  • Health

  • Mobility

  • Accessibility

  • Regional Connectivity

From there, we came up with our research question.

Data Collection

From there we started collecting data by sending out surveys and conducting in-person interviews.

However, to come up with these questions we had to do some empathy mapping. After that it was clear where we should focus.

After coming back together and comparing all our responses we were able to brainstorm a problem statement.

  • Young adults who work, live, and play in Ann Arbor need effective ways to communicate with the city about Vision Zero initiatives in order to feel safe and comfortable across different modes of transportation.

The main concerns we collected from the target audience lead us to focus on..

  • Getting the word out about Vision Zero to all residents and commuters.

  • Focusing on ways to reach the younger audience and getting them to engage, ages 19-29

Final Presentation

After collecting these responses and coming up with our problem statement, we spent the next week putting our findings into a presentation to present to Ann Arbor’s city hall.

We proposed an app that allows our target audience (including the young adults) to voice any complaints or problems that they come across while using different modes of public transportation throughout the city. This way the city of Ann Arbor is able to get the word out about Vision Zero and monitor how the changes they are making effect users.

Overall, we decided that the main issues with public transportation in Ann Arbor is people being unaware of changes and not voicing their concerns in a way that makes it back to the city.
