Goal: Come up with a sweatshirt design based off the identity made for the Gamma class.

Gamma Class Identity

This project as a whole was a pledge project given to the new Gamma class of Alpha Theta Delta. Since it is a multidisciplinary design fraternity, we were split into groups to basically come up with a name for ourselves.

Before we were split into our design groups, we all came together to come up with mood boards that represented our class.

Then, once we voted on the board we all liked most, we then picked a color scheme for the design groups to use as a reference.

To the right you can see the mood board we voted on and the final color scheme.

We were then split into groups such as website design, merch design, logo design, etc. I was put into the merch design group were we each had a week to comes up with our own designs to present.

Why I chose this design…

When it came to the design itself, there were a few ideas I wanted to explore…

  • A wavy, loose font to resemble a gamma ray

  • Neon colors and stars to match the mood board

Since I wanted the lettering to have an organic feel, I decided to create my own using Adobe Illustrator. I wanted the soft edges to contrast with the sharp corners of the stars.

For the stars, decided to make them different on the front and back to give the design more variation, however I added the shadows to help keep it all together. I was having a hard time with deciding how to capture the neon glow feel from the story board with just solid colors, so I decided to add some gradients to give the design more dimension and mimic the neon glow I was looking for.

As for the texture on the color, I was worried that the bright gradients would stand out too much once printed out. Although the gradients wouldn’t be cheap to do, I tried to keep a solid line around the whole design to make it easier to print. But, since this would mean harsh lines, I felt by adding noise to the colors I would be able to soften the look of it as a whole while keeping the simple boarder.

When it came to my color choices I didn’t have much of an option other than sticking to the ones we were given. However, I did spend a while playing with where to put them and decided gradients would help me include more of them.

As you can see below, I landed on this final design after many iterations.

First Design

Final Design

Although my design didn’t win the final vote, I learned a lot from not only the beginning steps but also from working with a design team. Since I had a team that I met with, even when while we were working on our own designs, I was given the opportunity to bounce off ideas and ask for help when I was stuck which was very helpful.
